How to boost your concentration?

Maintaining focus can be challenging due to the increasing amount of information we encounter every day. Here are four tips to help boost your concentration:

Eat a nutritious breakfast

Eating a balanced breakfast that includes natural carbohydrates and fiber is important for promoting information processing speeds. It's recommended to reduce the intake of foods high in added sugars and stimulants. Protein is also necessary to avoid energy loss around 11 AM. For instance, a breakfast could include a hot drink, oatmeal with vegetable milk, a seasonal fruit, and two eggs.

Practice physical exercises daily

Coordination exercises can enhance the flow of information between the two cerebral hemispheres, leading to better concentration. Try the "cross crawl" exercise every morning, which involves crossing your right elbow over your left knee and vice versa. Another exercise is to draw the infinity symbol in space with your right hand and then with your left hand, starting from the center and working upwards. Follow the movement of your hand with your eyes. This exercise can help you refocus and release persistent thoughts. Stretching exercises can also help you regain control of your body and reduce stress.

Use breathing exercises for mental calmness

Breathing exercises are an effective tool for relaxing and improving concentration at any time of the day. Try box breathing: sit on a chair with your feet flat on the floor, stretch your spine, and open your chest. Practice breathing in four phases, each with the same duration:

  • Inhale by inflating your belly
  • Hold your breath with full lungs
  • Exhale by releasing your belly
  • Hold your breath with empty lungs
Focus your attention

Choose a neutral object in front of you and focus your attention on it for two minutes without letting your mind wander. Examine all the details, such as color, shape, and texture. If this is too challenging at first, focus on your breathing (the air coming in and out). Practicing this exercise regularly can help improve your concentration over time.
