What is Your Legacy as an Athlete?

What is Your Legacy as an Athlete?

Alfred Nobel was born in 1833. At the age of 34, he invented dynamite, which was an immediate commercial success and widely used in mining. He is quoted as saying:

“My dynamite will sooner lead to peace than a thousand world conventions. As soon as men find that, in one instant, whole armies can be utterly destroyed, they will surely abide by the golden piece.”

Reevaluation

When he was 56 years old, something seemingly small forced him to reevaluate who he was, what he would be known for, and the legacy he would leave behind. His brother passed away, and a French newspaper published the obituary thinking that it was Alfred who died. The title of the obituary declared him “The Merchant of Death” and called out that he became rich by finding ways to kill more people faster than ever before. After reading this, he was determined to leave a different legacy.

At 62, he declared in his will that he wanted the majority of his fortune (worth $265 million today) to be given as prizes to those with the greatest discoveries or inventions in physics, chemistry, medicine, and the author of the “most outstanding work” of literature, for a person who had done the most or best work to spread peace between nations, and a sixth prize was added in 1968 for economics. The awards were first handed out in 1901 and continue to be awarded every December 10 on the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death. Think about the legacy you want to leave and what you want to be remembered for.

It would be amazing to be able to say you were a champion, the world’s greatest, the most renowned, the richest, the famous, or the most enlightened.

Let’s face the facts, there are very few people who will have this legacy.

Your legacy is how you helped others and the next generation is greater than they believed they could be. It is the relationships that you nurtured and value. These relationships are built upon all the small moments in time that you have shared.

In our daily lives, it is so easy to be distracted, to be thinking about what you are going to say next instead of listening, and to be focused on everything else but the person in front of you who is trying to make a connection. Make it a priority that each time someone is speaking to you, be mindful and commit to the present.

Summary: What is Your Legacy as an Athlete?

Listen without judgment. Validate their feelings because all feelings are valid. If you don’t understand, ask for clarification instead of jumping to conclusions, and have empathy and compassion. Don’t always try to solve their problems; instead, just listen and ask how you can support them. Don’t be afraid to let them know how they can support you.

Practice mindfulness in all your relationships every day and build your legacy.
